Almost everyone who owns a website will want new people to be able to find them; unless of course your website is only aimed at providing your aunties with the latest pictures of yourself. In order for visitors to find a website one of the most important things is the ability to end up high in the Google search engine results. There are many search engines out there, but let’s be honest here and admit that there is really only one show in town these days – especially in the English speaking world. If your website does not appear high in the Google search engine results for keywords associated with your content then you may as well just have a site devoted to keeping your family and friends entertained; nobody else will be able to find it.

The ability to get a website listed high in the Google search engine results is referred to as search engine optimisation (SEO). Google uses a special algorithm to rate websites and although nobody knows for sure how it works there is enough information for people to be able to arrange their website in such a way so as to look attractive to the Google bots; the software that searches the internet using the algorithm to rate sites. Doing things such as; making sure that plenty of people link to your site, ensuring that you have the correct keyword density, and paying close attention to titles and metatags, can all push you up the ranks. Now it seems a new factor, site speed, is being added to the mix; if your website takes a long time to load then this may harm your chances with the Google algorithm.

This move by Google to use site speed as a factor when ranking is actually a shrewd move; of course you won’t agree with this if you have a site that is slow and takes half a day to load. Still, it is well known that visitors get annoyed with slow sites and most will leave immediately rather than waste their time. People just don’t have the time to wait for a spectacular flash intro to load – even if it is something really fabulous. Most people just want to go a site, get the information they are after, and leave. This new algorithm is likely to be the future for SEO; although it has not yet been applied to Google in the UK and other parts of the world.

The ability to tweet on the go is something many people these days enjoy. The popularity of mobile tweeting has not gone unnoticed by those responsible for Twitter and they have now taken over the company responsible for the iPhone application Tweetie. This is already a popular way for people to engage with the Twitter world so it will be interesting to see how being owned by the makers of the site will affect its fortunes. This take over also comes right in time for the next Tweetie application designed for the iPad – an occurrence that is unlikely to have escaped the attention of those at Twitter.

The Popularity of Tweetie

There are a number of reasons why Tweetie is so popular already; for one thing it has its own unique feel to it and is not just a miniature version of Twitter. One of the nicest things about the application is that it allows users to almost effortlessly manage multiple accounts. The newest version of the application also allows you to do a lot while offline. It is constantly evolving yet despite this Tweetie remains easy to use. There are a few different Twitter applications out there to suit the iPhone, but many would agree that Tweetie is by far the best of the lot.

One of the inner circle at Twitter, Fred Wilson, gave everyone an idea of his intentions when he announced in his blog that his company were interested in developing their own application that would allow them to capture the market for mobile tweeting. The surge of popularity for the iPad is also sure to have been a factor in their decision making too. Rather than reinventing the wheel though, the decision makers decided to go with an application that was already available. So you now have all the advances provided by Tweetie but under the Twitter umbrella. The application is also due to change names; although many would view ‘Twitter for iPhone’ as being a far from innovative name.

The Future of ‘Twitter for iPhone’

It will be interesting to see what this takeover of Tweetie will lead to. Will it mean an even meatier application and enthusiastic support or will people choose the non-official versions? Many similar devices have had a downward change in fortunes after they were acquired by a bigger entity. Twitter doesn’t seem prepared to take too many chances and they will be making the application free for at least a few weeks.

A great deal has been written about online marketing and all of the strategies involved in promoting a business online. Business owners and marketers have some tremendous opportunities as they move through the offline world to make a statement about their business and network with others to market in the real world.

There are some key tips that will help you learn how to think of the offline world in the same way that you do your online marketing strategies. Some of the tips will seem very familiar to those who understand online marketing. What is different is the concept that they can be adapted for the offline world as well.

The first step in making contacts offline is in your attitude. You must learn to adopt a friendly attitude and be prepared when opportunity presents itself. It might be necessary to step out of your own world and initiate a conversation with others. Most people do not initiate conversations with strangers, but most people are very friendly when they are approached by others. Be prepared for those that are not in the mood for friendly conversation. It is not a reflection on you.

Try to actually listen to the person you are engaging. Don’t immediately try to sell them on your business. You are trying to gain some new clients, but it will be much more successful if you make an attempt to understand the person you are talking to.

Many conversations lead to the inevitable inquiry about what you do for a living. This is your opportunity to shine. State your value instead of your job title. Instead of giving your job title to a potential client, try stating what you actually bring to a business. Let them know that you help other businesses gain visibility online.

Business cards are a must have item. While those marketers that work online may think that a business card is completely unnecessary and outdated, there will always be times when you need to hand a business card to someone in the real world. Do you really want to jot your information down on a scrap of paper or do you want to show your potential client that you are a professional?

Not everyone you meet will be in need of your services, but there is a good chance that they will know someone who could hire you. Make sure that you leave a lasting impression with everyone you meet so that your name will be the first that they think of when they or someone they know needs marketing services.

Be helpful to others in the real world. This should never be done for strictly business reasons, but it can’t hurt to help someone with an armful of packages get through the door or the person stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire. It may start a conversation, it may help you get hired and it will make you feel good to help someone in need.

Become the person that others turn to for help or when they are looking for a solution. You should always help others when they are looking for a business, even if that business is not yours.

Try to get some contact information at the end of every conversation. This gives you what you need to make a follow up contact. Make sure that you write yourself a few notes about the conversation so that you can reintroduce the conversation. If you promised more information about another service or company, make sure that you have it available when you make the follow up contact.

Most people understand the benefits of blogging for freelancers, but there are some types of blog posts that naturally attract customers. Anyone can incorporate these types of posts on their blog for a greater chance of attracting clients.

A project description blog post or a case study can help readers of your blog learn some important lessons, but it also can attract some clients that may want you to do the same type of project for them. In this type of blog, you should describe the work that you did for your client and the results that you achieved. Make sure that you don’t name your client specifically in the blog post. Your readers can learn some potential information and prospective clients may learn about you and your services.

A tutorial blog post is also a great way to help your readers and demonstrate your expert knowledge to potential clients. All of the work that you describe in your tutorial are things that you can do for a client and they may decide that you are the right person for the project.

Reviews are always a good blog post. Regular readers enjoy reading reviews about products or services before they make a decision to buy. Your blog posts that do not benefit you at all will set you apart from others who review the same product or service. Make sure that you describe the product completely, your opinion, the intended audience for the product and some other similar products or services as an alternative.

Blog posts that are offering a special discount to readers is a way to help bring in clients when times are tough. We all go through tough times and a special discount blog post can sometimes help bring in additional clients and revenue.

Finally, an opinion on the current state of your business or a trend that you see coming down the line may attract clients as well. One of the things that your blog post must do is present you as an expert in your field. An opinion blog post can help to establish this identity for you.

Blog posts like these should be sprinkled on your blog throughout the year. Don’t just rely on these client getting posts when you are hitting tough times. Use this kind of drive and hard work all year long and you will soon have a healthy roster of clients in need of your services.

Adwords is now on the home page of google, well kinda, adwords sponsored keyword searches are in the dropdown keyword suggestion thingy.

Google appears to be live testing its new Sponsored search suggestion drop down. My Love hate relationship with google slowly lumbers on… with a bit more hate today, or is it love, i get confused.

For the first time ever today google ADWORDS can be seen on the home page of google..everybody say ohhhh.

When you tye anything into google these days it begins to “Suggest” possible keywords however I have noticed this morning that Sponsored results (only for google) appear to be being tested.

Yet another way for google to abuse the millions of visitors that use its search engine daily and garuntee more money for google, less for the small guy with an upcoming small business and more secutiry for the established business who has little need for SEO.

Not only that but the SEO’s of the world are getting there noses pushed out again making SEO harder and harder to give benefit.

Yelp is a popular review site that many people now turn to for advice when purchasing products and services or going out for an evening’s entertainment. The ability to go to their website and check out reviews is a real boon if you want to make an informed choice about how to spend your time and money.

For this information to have any relevance though it needs to be provided by people who are honestly giving their opinion about something they have tried. Unfortunately this does not seem to always be the case and many of the reviews will be at the behest of a company or by a rival company trying to destroy their name; the upshot being that many reviews are of no practical value when it comes to finding out about products and services.

It is probably understandable that companies will try and do all they can to promote whatever it is they are trying to flog. The chance to write glowing reviews about themselves is too good an opportunity to miss and few waste the opportunity. If the public realised just how many of the reviews available on the internet were bought and paid for there would probably be an outcry. It is also pretty understandable as to why some sneaky business people would go and write bad reviews about their rivals – not the most ethical action but certainly effective. For many people, one bad review would be enough to turn them off a product.

To be fair, Yelp is only one of the websites who provide a platform for dodgy reviews. The fact is that Yelp has also acknowledged the problem and they are doing what they can to rectify the situation. They are going to change the way that reviews are accepted and will remove some of the aspects of the site that allowed the spread of misinformation to become so pervasive.

The general advice for internet users would be to take all reviews with a pinch of salt. This does not mean that people should disregard everything they read on places like Yelp; this continues to be a useful service and many of the reviews are legit. If a review sounds too one-sided then this is usually a sign that something is amiss. Hopefully the move to tighten things up will lead to a reduction in the amount of false reviews but it is hard to imagine how it could be eradicated fully.

Web designers may be at a disadvantage when it comes to increasing the amount of revenue that is generated on a project. Service businesses such as a web designer are basically selling their time and expertise on the project. Many service businesses rely on increasing the amount of time that is spent on a project to increase revenues to their business. However, this can lead to a significant loss of personal time and more time spent in the office working.

Another approach is called for when a service related business such as a web designer wants to increase revenue. Each business is different and may require with a little tinkering of the techniques to suit the individual needs of the business. With some investment into finding a good strategy, a service business can increase revenue without a serious increase in office hours.

Choose your projects carefully. There is nothing worse than taking on a project that seems simple on the surface and discovering that it is eating away significant amounts of your time and energy. You watch helplessly as your rate per hour drops and your stress levels rise. Try to be choosey when you are selecting the projects that you will take on in your web design business.

Work and network with other web designers who may be able to take on some of your overflow of work when necessary. OUTSORCING IS THE KEY. A good network that is available to take on some of the additional work that you may have from time to time can help you manage your work time more efficiently and still bring in revenue for your business.

Do not provide hosting services to your clients. This will keep you dealing with customer service for much longer than you planned with each project. Customer support is not the business you are in when you have a web designing business. Look for a hosting company that meets the needs of your clients, but may also have a good affiliate program. Never pass your customer on to a poor hosting service though because of the affiliate program. The client’s needs must surpass your own. You should not use reseller hosting programs for the same reason. You will end up spending all of your time with client support instead of web designing.

Pay attention to where you market your services. Do not waste your time marketing to companies that are expecting low cost services. You will end up with poor paying clients and a significant drop in your rate per hour. Market your business as a premium service to clients that do not have a problem paying for quality service.

Network with other businesses that operate online. Copywriters, designers and other professionals will be happy to work with you and share leads. You also have a full network of professionals to help with some of your client demands.

Charge higher rates for short term projects. The goal should be a long term relationship with your clients. When you do take on short term projects, arrange the time frame to accommodate your other projects effectively. Let your clients know that you are working with a number of clients.

Focus your attention on the clients that offer the most growth potential. In the beginning, you may be tempted to take on all clients in an effort to meet your income needs. This is an inefficient way of doing business. Put the clients that have the most opportunity for growth and long term income at the top of your client list.

Work on saying no to some of the demands of your clients. As you work in your business, you will become familiar with the demands that are just going to eat up your valuable time. Learn how to say no when your plate is too full. Your focus should always be on increasing your rate per hour and not taking on all clients for every project.

It seems that tensions are mounting between Apple and Adobe. Lee Brimelow, a staunch supporter of Adobe, made the claim this week that the iPad ban on Flash was directly aimed at damaging Adobe. He has claimed that this ban is evidence of a ‘tyrannical’ attitude by Apple that will end up hurting many other developers as well – strong words indeed.

In the past Adobe has been quick to play down any rift that may exist between them and Apple. Things seem to be changing though as the dominance of the iPhone and new iPad becomes more obvious. This ban on flash based applications is going to have a huge effect as more and more people become part of the iPad phenomena. Not being able to get your products onto the device is going to mean a huge loss in potential earnings so it is no wonder that tempers are rising. In fact this could mean the death knell for many things flash-related.

Lee Brimelow has tried to make it clear that these are his own personal opinions and he does want to be seen as being representative of Adobe – still you have to think. One of the final quips in his blog post was the advice to Apple to, “go screw yourself”.

This war between HTML 5 and flash may also involve some personality clashes that go way beyond computer language. It almost certainly is causing a lot of passionate debate from supporters on both sides of the argument. It is understandable that developers, who have put so much effort into creating using flash, should feel angry that their work will not be available on the most popular platform around; it really must feel like a kick in the teeth. With so much at stake we are almost certain to see the war of words heat up. Although the comments made by Lee Brimelow may not be fully supported by the Adobe team it has almost certainly drawn them further into the conflict.

It will be interesting to see what this increasing hostility between Adobe and Apple leads to. The success of the iPad though is almost certain to give Apple the ability to call the shots. If they don’t want to use flash then there does not seem to be much anyone can do to make them change their minds. What all this means ultimately for Adobe and Flash is probably not going to be good.
